J.K Rowling is a personality that no more needs introduction. Her book Harry Potter is one of the most popular book and film franchises out there ; It was translated into 73 different languages and sold more than 450 million copies. This award-winning successful author, is today an inspiration for millions around the globe. Things although were not always prized for her and her life had its own vagaries, its ups and downs.

She was born as Joanne Rowling on 31st of July 1951.And her sister Dianne was born two years later. As she states, they grew up surrounded with books as their parents loved reading books.

She also tells that she wrote her first book ‘Rabbit’ when she was just six years old. Her father Peter James Rowling was an engineer at the British Rolls-Royce company and her mother Anne Rowling was a science technician. Her childhood is described as quite normal however her schoolmates describe her as a shy child. They remember her as an unsociable and secretive girl, who lives in the world of fantasy and always writes something in her notebook.

While Young she was very much in love with her then boyfriend Jorge Arantes.One weekend after finishing flat hunting for him she was returning to London by train, which was delayed. It was then, when the idea of Harry porter stuck her. In one of her shared incidents she tells how her flat got robbed and the thieves took everything except her writings and pictures of Harry Potter, that she had kept inside the box. It was this time when she realized there is something that she values.

I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do ever -was writing novels.

Her daughter Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes was born on July 27, 1993 in Portugal after an year of marriage. Joanne however went through a very difficult phase during all this time. Her closest confidant: her mother, died on December 30,1990 at the age of 45. Her husband failed to financially support her as he lost his job and she struggled hard to bring her daughter safely into this world. Soon after, her marriage fell apart and she also reported domestic violence.

She became clinically depressed and even contemplated suicide during this phase of her time. She was jobless and a single parent, almost on the edge of becoming homeless, when she decided to take up her responsibility. She started her fresh life with writing. By this time she had finished writing ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone‘ and ‘Harry potter and the chamber of secrets’. She started writing Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban to keep herself away from the thoughts of being broke and depressed. She could forget everything while sitting at her writing desk. She tells how she drove inspiration for the darkest characters in the books from the darkest times of her life like DEMENTORS who feed on human happiness.


Her difficult times didn’t leave her side too soon as her book got rejected by a dozen of publications. It was stated as a book too difficult for children. However her sister Dianne loved the character of Harry potter which became her source of motivation.

Against all odds her books was finally accepted by Bloomsbury and was published on June 26th 1997.She adopted the name of her grandmother, Katherine as her middle name to keep it as J.K Rowling as she was worried that people won’t take a female author seriously. A story about a young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his 11th birthday very soon became a sensation. It won most of the British book awards that were judged by children and other awards in the US. The book reached the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999 and stayed near the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000. All the sequels of this book were also made into films. The sequels are: Harry potter and the goblet of fire; Harry potter and the Order of phoenix; Harry potter and the Half-blood prince; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts I & II.

According to the 2018 Sunday Times Rich List, Rowling’s net worth is estimated at around 700 million. Today she is named among the top self-made billionaires. On December 26, 2001, Rowling married Dr. Neil Scott Murray (born June 30, 1971), a Scottish anesthetist in a private wedding. She followed her calling and earned what she well deserved. What kept her company and got her going on her hard days was her love for books. Her life and her passion now serves as a motivation for many of us.
